ELECTRICITY

Specific Actions:

  1. Burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas to produce electricity is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Generating energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar, produces less emissions.
  2. Switching to electricity officially accredited as coming from renewable sources (known as GreenPower™) is a good way of reducing your carbon footprint.
  3. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  4. Turn off your lights when you are not using them
  5. Turn off appliances at the power point rather than leaving them on standby
  6. Dry your clothes on the clothes line rather than using a drier
  7. Purchase electrical items that have a high energy efficiency rating
  8. Defrost you fridge & freezer regularly to improve efficiency
  9. Insulate your home to make it warmer in winter & cooler in summer
  10. Replace your old electric hot water system with a more energy efficient solar, gas or heat pump system
  11. Wear warmer clothes in winter rather than increasing your heating
  12. Use cold water where possible to wash your clothes
