ELECTRICITY
Specific Actions:
- Burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas to produce electricity is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Generating energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar, produces less emissions.
- Switching to electricity officially accredited as coming from renewable sources (known as GreenPower™) is a good way of reducing your carbon footprint.
- Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
- Turn off your lights when you are not using them
- Turn off appliances at the power point rather than leaving them on standby
- Dry your clothes on the clothes line rather than using a drier
- Purchase electrical items that have a high energy efficiency rating
- Defrost you fridge & freezer regularly to improve efficiency
- Insulate your home to make it warmer in winter & cooler in summer
- Replace your old electric hot water system with a more energy efficient solar, gas or heat pump system
- Wear warmer clothes in winter rather than increasing your heating
- Use cold water where possible to wash your clothes
