Impacts

The poor are negatively impacted when:

  • using food grains such as corn to produce biofuel reduces the availability of grain and increases the price of food in poor nations who are net importers of food grain.
  • using land and water to grow biofuels rather than food diminishes food security in developing countries. add to food shortages. Growing crops for biofuels that compete with food crops for land and water will only add to food shortages.
  • using land and water to grow carbon off-setting plantations rather than food needed by poor communities. Many programs seek to offset carbon emissions by planting trees. However tree planting that reduces the land available to planting trees to offset carbon emissions
We need solutions that reduce our impact on the environment while providing opportunities for all.
